Diversity and Inclusion & Women in Medicine

Our mission is to provide a supportive and inclusive environment that allows residents to learn the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of an exceptional emergency physician, while encouraging and fostering the development of each individual resident’s own interest, goals, well-being, and professional identity. We assure that our graduates are highly qualified and extremely competent emergency physicians capable of working in a variety of settings, urban and rural, resource rich or resource poor, academic and community. Serving our diverse Brooklyn community and beyond, we ensure that our residents are culturally competent and compassionate in the delivery of their care.

We at Maimonides acknowledge the current inequities in medicine and we believe that being diverse and inclusive makes us a stronger and healthier community. As a residency program, our family welcomes residents from all races, genders, social classes, and sexual orientations. Cultural identity is an integral part of the patients we treat, as Maimonides serves Borough Park, which is a large, diverse neighborhood in Brooklyn. Our program is currently working to reflect the diverse patient populations that we serve everyday in our Emergency Department. We are actively committed to achieving equity and enhancing diversity by:

  • Partnering with SNMA

  • Providing Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship Awards for first year and senior medical students

  • Formation of an D&I committee that is devoted to having active discussion about social injustices, health disparities, and URM’s in medicine

Maimonides Medical Center Emergency Medicine Department welcomes you to become part of our family and work with us as we continue to foster and create a more diverse and inclusive environment.
